(#015) Midwinter in Antarctica - Waiting for the Sun

(#015) Midwinter in Antarctica - Waiting for the Sun

Midwinter Day - It's the only holiday in the world that’s celebrated across an entire continent by every person who lives there, and it's happening in Antarctica right now.

In the deepest, darkest part of the yar, Antarcticans look for ways to see the light at the end of the tunnel - a big deal when you haven’t seen the sun for a few months.

In this episode of Antarctica Did That For Me, we (your hosts, Keri Nelson and Cassa Grant) give you a snapshot of the Midwinter tradition and celebration, including the history of midwinter celebrations in Antarctica, the importance of the holiday for winterovers, and the traditions and themes associated with the holiday celebrated by all Antarctic bases across the continent.

It’s a celebration of challenges faced, fears overcome, and appreciation for possibilities, and it can help us shape our own holiday celebrations in the “real” world.
